Huawei has added more and offers with the Mate Xs a revised version of the folding smartphone. Besides the other technical specifications, it's mainly the Falcon Wing hinge that makes the difference to its predecessor. This offers a much higher stability and can now be positioned at any angle.
Two become one - the flexible display
Of course, Huawei's innovative flagship has been provided with the best technical specifications. But the really special thing is that, or rather the displays. The larger of the two offers a diagonal of 6.6 inches and has a resolution of 2400 x 1148 pixels. This is complemented by a 6.38 inch panel, which is positioned on the back of the device when folded. When both screens are put together, an 8-inch AMOLED display opens up, which is unparalleled. Huawei is also setting a new trend in terms of format: the large screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio. Admittedly, the display leaves a gigantic impression on the viewer. Sitting in a café or riding the train, the necks of those present will stretch in view of the Mate X's extravagant design. The high flexibility of the panel is guaranteed by a novel polymer structure, which is also used in aerospace technology.
Better than the Samsung Fold?
Huawei competes in this completely new type of smartphone especially against Samsung and Motorola. However, the Samsung Fold and Flip Z have a different type of design and are thicker than the Mate Xs throughout. The same applies to the Razr from Motorola. With a thickness of 11 mm when folded, Huawei's technical gem is far more compact than its competitors. When the panel is unfolded, the smartphone is an incredible 5.4 mm thick. The width of the device is then an impressive 146.2 mm. Especially movie lovers will immediately fall in love with the large display. The height of the phone remains of course unchanged at 161.3 mm.
Performance at the highest level
Of course, the Mate Xs offers only the best of the best in terms of technical equipment. A Kirin 990 Soc slumbers inside the impressive case, which is clocked at up to 2.86 Ghz. The Octa Core CPU is supported by a Mali G76 graphics chip with 16 cores. The duo is rounded off by 8 GB RAM. Unlike the new Snapdragon 865, the modem for accessing the mobile network is integrated directly on the SoC. On the one hand, this results in higher energy efficiency. On the other hand, the performance of the smartphone can also be increased.
Large memory, larger battery, fastest charging technology
When looking at the other specifications of the Mate Xs, it is noticeable that the manufacturer has only used superlatives. Huawei started with the internal memory. With 512 GB, the smartphone offers more storage space than many notebooks. Even app collectors and photo fanatics with a quick release finger will have problems getting the memory filled completely. Huawei is similarly generous with the battery. It offers a capacity of 4500 mAh and even in view of the large display, it can last especially long days without a pit stop on the charging cable. The charging technology is even more impressive. With an incredible 55W, the charging current is conducted into the battery via Huawei SuperCharge. The smartphone can therefore be charged to 85% in around 30 minutes.
Novel camera concept
The innovative display offers more than interesting possibilities with regard to photo and video recording. A front camera has become unnecessary thanks to the foldable display. If selfies are to be shot, the display can be switched on right next to the camera lenses. Especially practical: Both displays can be activated if desired. This allows the photographer and the subject to look through the virtual camera viewfinder at the same time.
High quality snapshots guaranteed
But not only the concept, but also the cameras themselves are impressive. Because Huawei relies on an absolutely high-quality triple camera. The main camera offers a resolution of 40 megapixels and is equipped with an f/1.8 aperture. Panoramic shots, on the other hand, are taken with the 16 megapixel ultra-wide angle camera, which is equipped with an f/2.2 aperture. The 8-megapixel telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture brings distant objects up close thanks to both optical and digital zoom. To ensure that the subjects are captured in razor-sharp detail, the Mate Xs uses an OIS that can compensate for unwanted hand movements. In addition, the Huawei AI Image Stabilization is used as AIS. The already strong camera trio is completed by a ToF Sensor, which provides perfect bokeh effects.
Surfing at maximum speed
In terms of transmission speed, even the most demanding users will be satisfied. The modern 5G network can be used with the Mate Xs without restrictions. Thanks to Dual Sim, even two phone numbers can be easily managed with the phone. A fast data connection is also established within known networks. The 802.11 a, b, g, n and ac standards are known to the smartphone. Fitness trackers and smartwatches can be connected via Bluetooth 5.0. Location services run without restrictions thanks to GPS, AGPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS. Of course, the Huawei Mate Xs can also be used for contactless payment. An NFC chip was installed.
